Milk Bar LA - I like you (a lot!)
Let’s talk about how much I love Milk Bar. What’s not to love? Cookies? Check. Cake? Check. Cereal milk soft serve ice cream? Check. Now let’s talk about Christina Tosi. If you happened to watch the Chef’s Table episode on Netflix about her, watch it. She is so cool. She started out working at Momofuku in NYC with David Chang. (cool NYC restaurant and it’s amazing chef. Google it.) Here’s the cliff notes - She worked there for a while and began making baked goods and they took off. That was like 10 years ago. Flash forward to today. She has an empire of sweets. There are locations in NYC, LA, DC, Vegas and Toronto. It’s like Willy Wonka if he was a girl who baked, was crazy talented and was super cool.
The LA store opened a few weeks ago to rave reviews and lines around the block. They also offer a few different classes on making and assembling some of their most popular items. Since I am a super fan (I have baked like half of her original cookbook) I decided to take the Birthday Cake Class. OK, I totally geeked out. First of all, CHRISTINA WAS THERE! She didn’t teach the class but was working back in the kitchen. Needless to say, I gawked. The class is cake assembly since it would take forever to make all the things that go into this cake. You start with all the elements and then they walk you through putting it all together. The teachers, Skip and Nicole, were funny and engaging. The tell you about the history of Milk bar and how they do what they do. Did I mention, I geeked out? I geeked out hard. I was so excited and asked a million questions. I was like Tracy Flick in “Election” (1999 movie. Google it), striving for perfection and annoyingly excited about it.
In the end, I had my very own rad birthday cake. (I am proud to say mine was the tallest in the class.). I’m totally going back for the Crack Pie class, where you get to used big silver mixers! It’s perfect for anyone who loves to bake but doesn’t have the time, patience or counter space for some of these recipes. And you get to leave with cake!
